The league played its first game on September 22, 1920, against the Massillon Tigers. The game was won by the Bulldogs, 27-0.

On November 23, 1921, the league changed its name from the American Professional Football Association to the National Football League. The league then went through many changes before finally merging with the upstart All-America Football.
